Functional Patterns Costa Mesa training studio

Eliminate Pain & Rehab Injuries

- We'll give you the tools to resolve chronic pain and help you recover from nagging injuries that are holding you back from living your life to the fullest.

- When other methods fail to work, Functional Patterns has an excellent track record of not only getting people out of pain, but helping people stay out of pain for good. This is because Functional Patterns addresses issues at the root cause rather than simply treating symptoms.

Improve Scoliosis & Correct Posture

- Chronic pain is often caused by imbalances in your structure. When your muscles and fascia don't have the proper length-tension relationships, these imbalances can manifest as pain.

- Functional Patterns' unique approach to training takes into account the body's myofascial sling system. We've produced remarkable results on people with neurodegenerative disorders and conditions such as scoliosis, rounded shoulders, and swayback.

Gain Strength & Increase Athleticism

- Functional Patterns is not just a corrective exercise system. FP is utilized worldwide by many world-class athletes as one of the best strength and conditioning protocols. While other systems encourage people to move in an unrealistic fixed box, Functional Patterns trains people to move in a 3-dimensional reality.

- Olympic wrestler Kyle Dake and Bellator Middleweight Champion Johnny Eblen are two athletes who have utilized Functional Patterns to dig themselves out of nearly career-ending injuries and win world championships.

FUNCTIONAL PATTERNS
"FIRST FOUR 4" MOVEMENTS

There’s an evolutionary blueprint to all organisms, and Functional Patterns has been cracking the code in human movement for nearly 15 years. Resulting from tens of thousands of hours in testing, we have pioneered the FP methodology, syncing the physics of our natural environment to our health better than any other system out there. Our conclusion has been to train humans according to their biological movement characteristics: Standing, Walking, Running, and Throwing — The “FP Big 4”. By optimizing these four human functions, achieving better health is not a gamble, but an inevitability. This is what it means to train Functional Patterns.

At age 50, I tore my Achilles tendon playing basketball and retired from competitive sports. At 64, I had my right hip replaced due to wear & tear which caused chronic joint pain. I gained weight - the heaviest I’ve ever been. I felt sluggish and had aches in my shoulders, hips, and feet. When I tried Functional Patterns with Andy, I was surprised that the exercises didn’t involve heavy lifting. More importantly, the exercises didn’t cause pain to my surgically repaired joints. In the past, I would eat until I was stuffed. Now, I don’t limit myself, and I’m surprised how sustainable it is. I haven’t felt this good since I was 30. I’m so pleased I can throw a baseball with my grandson using my surgically repaired left shoulder. FP has made my life pain-free!”

I was born with pectus excavatum. I had major pain in my left hip/groin area that stemmed from running and made me unable to run more than 2 miles at once. I had recurring low back pain on both sides that would be aggravated by many of the workouts I was doing before FP. After training FP, I am in the best shape of my life. My rib flare and chest indentation have drastically reduced with all of the deliberate chambers that Andy has taught me. FP has gotten me to a point where I no longer experience any hip pain when I run. None of the FP exercises aggravate my back, and in fact, have helped build enough muscle to prevent back pain in my daily life. I also completely changed my diet - no processed foods and I eat red meat, dairy, eggs, & fruit. My stomach feels much better - I can tolerate dairy, have regular bowel movements and increased energy levels.

Before starting FP, pain and tightness in my hips and groin were at least a 7. My low back was always a 4 or 5. I felt like a wishbone. Standing comfortably felt like an effort, and after a short duration my body had a strong urge to sit. After FP corrective exercises and significantly reducing grains, pain and tightness levels in my hips and groin are now only 1 or 2 at most. My back is now at 0—no more back pain. Standing, walking, and running feel drastically easier and can be sustained for much longer durations.

Where do I begin. In 2023, I hired a personal trainer because I thought heavy lifting was the path to health and strength. Instead, my body started breaking down. My traps grew disproportionately, I developed a bulging disc, constant tension, and worst of all I felt heavy in my own body.I’m not just someone trying to “look fit.” I’m an athlete. I love sprinting, beach volleyball, basketball, agility, speed, fluidity, and feeling light. Heavy lifting disconnected me from myself. The stronger I looked externally, the worse I felt internally.Eventually, I stopped working out for an entire year and tried to heal through chiropractic work alone, but I still didn’t feel like myself. I felt frustrated, disconnected, and honestly depressed because my body no longer moved the way it naturally wanted to.Then I found Functional Patterns. FP completely changed the way I understand the body, movement, and health.FP showed me that the body is an interconnected communication system where posture, gait, fascia, breathing, and mechanics all influence each other simultaneously. What makes FP different is that it doesn’t just train the body to look better it trains the body to function better in gravity, in motion, and in life.I'm more aware of how my body organizes tension, how compensation patterns affect energy levels, and how structure influences everything from breathing to nervous system regulation. My posture improved, my gait became more fluid, my body felt more integrated, and I started experiencing movement as coherence instead of force. One of the biggest shifts for me was understanding the glute-to-leg connection and how the body is meant to distribute force through the entire system. Ironically, my glutes are now bigger, firmer, and more lifted than they have ever been in my life and not a single hip thrust, deadlift, RDL or squat was done in the making of them. That alone completely changed my perspective on fitness and the body.I’ve regained movement quality I honestly thought I had lost forever. I feel light, fast, elastic, and coordinated again. I’m sprinting like my 13-year-old self & it feels amazing.Honestly, I’m so obsessed with FP that I drive 45 minutes to an hour each way, 3 times a week, just to train. That alone should tell you how much I believe in this system and how different I feel because of it.But the most important part of this experience has been the people.I want to deeply thank my practitioner Tony for guiding me through this process with patience lot of patience haha, intelligence, encouragement, and genuine care. Having someone who truly understands the body and knows how to meet you where you are makes all the difference.I also want to thank Andy, Vik, Kendra, and Kevin. The entire team has created an environment that feels supportive, knowledgeable, and deeply committed to helping people actually heal and function better not just “work out.”If you’re willing to unlearn conventional fitness culture and actually understand how the human body is designed to move, FP is transformational. I cannot recommend FP enough.

This place is on a completely different level. My session at Functional Patterns Costa Mesa wasn’t just a workout or a treatment — it was an eye-opening reset of how my body actually moves and functions. Their message is clear and refreshing: stop chasing symptoms and start fixing the root cause. The coach took time to assess how I stand, walk, and load my body, then dialed in precise, intentional work to correct imbalances I didn’t even realize were holding me back. Nothing felt random or generic — everything had a purpose. I left feeling more aligned, lighter, and noticeably better in my movement, with a clear understanding of what my body needs long-term. If you’re serious about reducing pain, improving performance, and actually changing how your body works (not just getting a temporary feel-good session), this is the real deal.

At the age of 31, I found Functional Patterns after nearly a decade of of yoga, in a hyper-mobile body that could barely hold itself while standing, joint-muscle pain, and depression (from no longer being able to move my body in a way that felt right or strong). Prior to FP, I had done plenty of massage, physical therapy exercises and other pain management modalities…all providing great relief but nothing that was sustainable or long lasting. I learned through FP how elongated and over stretched my body was, and that my joints were primarily the only scaffolding to my body.I’ve trained under the system for about 3 years and change, and have been out of acute pain since the first few months. I've stuck with FP to level up my body’s ability to build muscular support in areas I’ve never been able to access, to correct my scoliotic spine, and to re-establish proper shoulder-hip function dynamics and combat peri-menopause, when that sets in.On a trip out to California, I was pointed to checked out FP Costa Mesa. The team here has been a pleasure to work with (Tony and Andy). From the initial call to the post session check-in’s, I have felt considered, heard, and guided through my sessions under the watchful guidance of these skilled practitioners. If you’re looking to level up your body and get to the root of your asymmetries and dysfunctions, this is it. Your searching will likely stop here!

FP Costa Mesa… walking in the door, it’s immediately obvious that you’ll have an elevated workout experience. The top of the line equipment, the interior finishes, and the cleanliness and organization of the space sets the stage for the FP practitioners to guide you through corrective exercises that will get you moving more functionally. You can supplement your one-on-one sessions with group classes to continue on your improvement path and to meet other like-minded individuals. I appreciate that they intentionally keep the group classes smaller so that everyone gets some individual attention still.

I wholeheartedly recommend this! I have been involved in the fitness industry for 13 years, being a Bikini Pro and an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer.I found out later in life I had scoliosis, a couple of years ago I came across the FP online 10-week Program and Functional Training System courses. While I completed the courses online by myself, I realized my body wasn't moving as it should. I knew I needed 1:1 coaching. Although the nearest FB practitioner was over an hour away(without traffic), I knew it would be beneficial. The drive has been completely worth it!! Andy is reteaching me how to stand, walk, run, and move my body optimally as a whole. I only wish I had started my fitness journey with this fundamental foundation!!

Frequently Asked Questions

What services do you offer? Do you offer group classes?

We offer 1:1 training, semi-private training, and group classes depending on your current situation. During your initial consultation, we will assess your body's movement capabilities and recommend which of our services is best for you. Our 1:1 training and/or our 6-Week Beginners Semi-Private Training is where most of our members start off with because this is where you build a foundation for fixing your posture and reducing pain. Unlike other methods, Functional Patterns is meant to be highly individualized to your specific imbalances - this allows us to apply the corrective techniques precisely to make drastic changes to your body.

Our 1:1 sessions are conducted in our studio in Orange County. For people who are not local to the Orange County area, we do offer one-on-one online sessions via Zoom or Facetime.

Are there any prerequisites prior to training one-on-one sessions?

The prerequisite for everyone to train with us is our initial 90-minute consultation. During this consultation, we'll assess your posture and gait cycle via slow-motion video analysis, take you through an introductory Functional Patterns workout, and recommend a program based on your goals and unique needs.

We also recommend that you start the Functional Patterns 10-Week Online Course. This isn't mandatory prior to training with us, but it educates you on foundational concepts that you’ll be utilizing throughout your FP journey and enables you to get more out of your training sessions.

Who is Functional Patterns meant for?

Functional Patterns has proven to be effective across a wide variety of demographics. Regardless of your age, gender, athletic background, or injury history, FP techniques are fundamentally designed to optimize you as a HUMAN BEING.

Functional Patterns practitioners across the world have produced drastic results with clients with neurodegenerative disorders, scoliosis, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease, full joint replacements, and much more.

While we don’t guarantee results for your unique situation, we are confident that your quality of life can be improved by optimizing the four fundamental movement patterns - standing, walking, running, and throwing. When you improve these functions, everything else tends to improve as well.

What makes Functional Patterns different from other methods?

The root cause of your imbalances, injuries, and dysfunctions can almost always be traced back to poor biomechanics. These faulty movement patterns lead to too much tension in undesired areas and a lack of tension in the right areas. While other methods look to treat the symptoms of your pain and injuries for short-term relief, Functional Patterns gets to the source in order to eliminate your pain for good.

We treat the body how it's meant to function - as one interconnected unit. We account for more variables in your movement with a much greater degree of precision than other methods. This is why Functional Patterns practitioners across the world have been able to produce remarkable results on people from all walks of life regardless of age, gender, background, or athletic capability. Don’t take our word for it - check out the thousands of before and after results on the Functional Patterns website and Instagram pages.

Will Functional Patterns help me improve strength and fitness or is it only appropriate for people who are injured or need corrective exercise?

Functional Patterns is not only one of the most proven methods for rehabilitating people who are in pain or injured, but it is also a highly effective protocol to improve strength, fitness, and athleticism simultaneously. Both regular people and professional athletes alike have utilized Functional Patterns to get in the best physical shape of their life.

Two examples of world-class athletes who have used Functional Patterns as their primary strength and conditioning regimen are MMA world champion Johnny Eblen and Olympic wrestler Kyle Dake.

The neat thing about training Functional Patterns is that regardless of your specific goal, all the training we do improves multiple physical qualities simultaneously (strength, stability, fat loss, muscular endurance, etc). Our method blends rehab and strength training in one to save you time and kill two birds with one stone.

How many times a week do I need to train in-person sessions?

Our clients who have gotten the best results train hourly 1-on-1 sessions with a practitioner anywhere from 1-3 times a week. The frequency will vary depending on your current physical state, goals, and schedule to make it work for you.

In addition to the in-person sessions, we will assign techniques for you to practice on your own - this work you do on your own is essential for making progress. We are here to guide you, but you are ultimately the one who is responsible for your own health and wellness.

Who is Functional Patterns meant for?

The great news is that Functional Patterns requires very minimal equipment compared to other workout programs. You can practice the workouts in any commercial gym or simply purchase cheap, easily-obtainable tools to practice at home without needing to go to the gym at all!

The tools required include:

- Resistance Bands or Pulley Machine

- Light Dumbbells
